The premium enjoyed by banknotes over coined dollars has been normal in Hong Kong for at

least 30 years, apparently ever since the Banks

began to arrange their clearances in notes and not

in silver. Last summer, however, it rose to

altogether abnormal levels, reaching even 20% at the
